Synopsis: Taking a semiotic analysis of the SUV/Hummer the article examines how various aspects of its design help to provoke, bear and circulate meanings within culture and tap into wider socio-cultural anxieties, in particular a culture of fear. Increasing insecurity and uncertainty within postmodernity has made death appear ubiquitous (killer bugs in clean hospitals, paedophiles hiding on the internet, terrorists living next door, GM ‘alien’ food etc) to the point that everything and everyone is a possible threat. I argue that the Hummer, like Jeffords (1994) thesis of a hard body/masculinity, offers magical resolutions to consumer anxieties by creating a series of boundaries around the self.
